The best of times... the worst of times
The survey revealed that the level of absolute poverty in Egypt is on the rise. An estimated 13 million Egyptians, or 19.6 per cent of the population, earned less than $2 a day in 2005, up from 16.7 per cent in 2000. This renders meeting basic needs a distant dream. Economists also have reservations about the government's elation with the spurt in FDIs, claiming they were not directed to heavy labour industries and thus are powerless to create more employment opportunities. On the contrary, increased foreign investment in the real estate sector have led to skyrocketing real estate prices. Even the more financially privileged of the country's citizens had a tough year. The cautious monetary policy followed by the government throughout the year by maintaining its bank lending and deposit rates at their December 2006 levels of 10.75 per cent and 8.75 per cent respectively has made the yield on investor deposits nil in light of the increasing inflation.
Singer, actor Robert Goulet dies at 73
If Ever I Would Leave You, Lancelot's love song to Guinevere, remained a signature tune throughout his career. But after becoming a fixture at Las Vegas, he developed the image of a Lothario crooner with twinkling blue eyes, singing through a haze of cigarette smoke. His deep, distinctive laugh and sometimes broad opinions also made him a darling of the late-night chat shows. Both Canada and the U.S. claim him as one of their biggest stars and he accepts both connections. "Sometimes both countries want to claim me, but then, there have been periods when each one said to the other 'You take him, we don't want him,'" he joked in a 2005 interview. Goulet was born on Nov. 26, 1933, in Lawrence, Mass. His father, Joseph, was from Quebec and his mother, Jeannette, was from Lewiston, Maine, although her family originally came from Quebec.
H.E. Sheikha Lubna honored with Brand Leadership Award at 16th Asia ...
The primary focus of this year's event was ensuring brand clarity and consistency in today's multi-channel world, with 70 speakers from 60 countries taking part. Tejari's achievements in fostering awareness about the benefits of online procurement and the expansion of its brand into international markets are among the justifications for the honor. On hand to receive the Brand Leadership award at the Asia Brand Congress was Tejari's founding CEO and current board member, HE Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, as well as current CEO Omar Hijazi. 'Given that Tejari enables companies to do business internationally by delivering access to opportunities in new markets, it is a significant honor to be recognized by an international body within Asia. Our initial remit was to streamline business opportunities in the UAE, and this award highlights the international nature of Tejari's operations today,' said Sheikha Lubna.
