EMI Music Set To Reveal Plans To Axe Up To 2,000 Jobs
EMI has been struggling with falling CD sales across the industry due to the rise of digital downloading and piracy. The company made pre-tax losses of 263.6m last year. Terra Firma's owner, financier Guy Hands, will reveal the plans at a meeting at the Odeon cinema in Kensington - staff as well as artists and their representatives have been invited. Mr Hands is reportedly looking to cut costs by centralising back office functions for all of EMI's 40 record labels. Jobs in marketing, sales, distribution and artist management among the group's overall 5,500 staff are likely to go. He is also looking to prune marketing spend from 20% of projected sales to around 12%, with the overall aim of boosting profits by 100m this summer.
Utah gears up for another round of bills and laws
Bills are lining up to improve pay for math and science teachers, subjects that traditionally draw fewer candidates. And while improved technology hardware was on the docket last year, Valentine said it's likely that software that improves learning will be funded this year. Grab that cash Utah's vibrant economy has fueled a budget that has grown substantially over the past four years. The state has seen massive surpluses over the past two years, and while this year's is lower, it is still in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Lawmakers have used state coffers to bolster education and pay for massive transportation projects after lean times during the first part of the decade.
Verizon's iPhone Clone: Close, but No Cigar
On the Voyager, the interface uses touch controls on the front cover only and really just to open an application. Use photos as an example: On the iPhone, when you look at family photos, you flick to the next one with a finger. Then, by using two fingers as if they were tweezers, you can enlarge or shrink a photo. Lots of fun. On the Voyager, you tap on a photo to open it. That's it. You can't manipulate the image at all.
