Microsoft Reworks Antipiracy Procedures After WGA Meltdown

Microsoft blamed WGA's 19-hour August meltdown on human error, saying that "preproduction code" had been installed on the live servers, which then began declining legitimate requests from Windows XP and Windows Vista users. A software rollback fixed the problem on the activation servers, but not on the servers that validate downloads and other post-activation transactions.

E-tailers beware: OFT web sweep is imminent

Do your ecommerce operations comply with the law? The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and the Local Authority Trading Standards Services are planning a sweep of the UK's top 600 retail websites to ensure they meet key legislation. Paula Barrett warns particular attention will be paid to distance selling rules.

The Distance Selling Regulations deal with business-to-consumer sales which are not made face to face - therefore they apply to internet sales. They set out a number of consumer rights, including seven-day post-purchase cancellation rights, a right to a refund and a raft of information that must be provided pre- and post-sale.

Despite estimates that 14bn will be spent by consumers online this Christmas, recent research by the OFT indicates that very few online shoppers are aware of additional legal protection provided by the regulations and that many websites may be failing to respect consumers' rights.

Two new models will be offered in January with prices starting below $2,000. "This announcement is welcome to many of Lenovo's existing customers that have standardized on it as a desktop supplier but have had to turn to another supplier for workstations," said analyst Benjamin Gray.

Fast-moving digital world - present and future

The growth in digital devices and rising broadband penetration is causing headaches as well as creating new opportunities for content owners, platform providers and technology companies alike, not to mention regulators.

Come together
Everyday media devices, including mobile phones, digital TVs and video gaming systems, look set this year to take a step closer to the truly converged media hardware so long predicted.

China/RegulationDigitisation gains
I have a map in my Beijing office produced here and China is at the centre - that makes the world look very different.

Industry under scrutiny
It's going to be a hectic year for Ofcom. The regulator, still busy looking into pay TV, is now due to review public service broadcasting.

Games
Video games and virtual worlds are both becoming an increasingly central part of big media companies' growth strategies, particularly to target younger people who spend large amounts of time online or on portable games consoles like the Nintendo DS.

UCLA's Love, Blue Hens take home Weely Watch honors

Behind the play of senior guard Leemire Goldwire (19 ppg, 5 rpg, 80 percent from the line), Charlotte has also beaten Wake Forest, Davidson and Southern Illinois, and lost tight ones to Maryland and Georgia Tech. Whether Lutz earns his way into the NCAA Tournament (Charlotte is now 10-5), he has earned everyone's respect.

3. Bruins with D Washington State is a great defensive team. UCLA is a better one. Don't be fooled by the final score of 81-74, because Ben Howland's Bruins won the "grinder" against Tony Bennett's Cougars on the defensive end. The Bruins held Wazzu to just 22 points on 38 percent shooting in the first half, and UCLA led by double-digits for most of the game. After 28 minutes of play, Washington State had only 30 points, and after over 38 minutes of play, UCLA led 68-53.
